THERE'S MORE THAN ONE WAY TO SKIN A CAT

In Charleston, South Carolina, bridges are being constructed across wetlands by erecting a temporary steel trestle alongside the cast-in-place structure. The post-tensioned box girder bridge also crosses two rivers and will form the southernmost piece of the Interstate 526 beltway around metropolitan Charleston. Becasuse the South Carolina Coastal Council would not permit the contractor to dredge any cuts in the marsh or build a haul road, a work trestle was built which was suported on steel piles driven into the marsh from the river's edge. The details of the construction are summarized in which floating equipment was used to drive 24-in-dia piles for the first three bents of the work trestle, and a crane was installed in the track between the bents.
