CALTRANS TO RETROFIT VIADUCTS
A new technology will be used for the seismic strengthening of concrete bridges, specifically, the earthquake damaged viaducts in San Francisco. Caltrans will retrofit four of the San Francisco viaducts with concrete edge girders of the design successfully tested at the University of California at San Diego. Edge beams will be installed along roadway decks that span longitudinally between new circular columns . The half mile southern section of the double-decked Central Freeway is expected to cost $30 million. At an estimated costs of $92 million, Caltrans will retrofit the 3 viaducts on a 20-mile section of the Sourthern Freeway (Interstate 280). Other planned reconstructions are briefly noted.
