SHIPS TO TRANSIT THE ARCTIC OCEAN
Within the next decade, ships will be crossing and supporting operations in the Arctic Ocean during all seasons. The specialized technology and engineering research laboratories are available today to achieve these goals. The purpose of this paper is to review the icebreaking ship design technology and to present a conceptual design for an icebreaking ship capable of breaking ten feet of ice in the continuous mode. Included in the discussion is a brief description of arctic ice conditions, the conceptual design of an icebreaking ship with a table of principal characteristics, and an estimate of ship cost. A description of some current engineering research efforts to reduce icebreaking resistance is presented including some thoughts on areas requiring further investigation.
