JOINTLESS REDECKING

A bridge redecking project is described, where the major cause of its corrosion was elliminated by removing the expansion joints. When redecking the 42-year-old bridge crossing the Teoga River, New York, expansion joints were removed without even a formal cost analysis of the joint removal because the savings were obvious. Initial construction would cost less (no need for fabrication and installation of 3 new bridge and bridge railing expansion joints), and there would be no need for long-term maintenance: no more leaks from joint seals that damage stringer ends, diaphragms, bearings and the tops of piers. The article describes how joints were eliminated and a continuous slab system was created.. The installation sequence is described.
