SKIDDING ALONG WITH ANTI-SKID
The hearings are reported which were held by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in connection with the controversy over the federal safety standard for truck brake systems, MVSS 121. An unusually high problem rate of 9.4 percent was being experienced on diesel trucks built by the Freightliner Corp. Similar problems were encountered by Motor Coach Industries whic installed antiskid components. Failures were reported of computers, fuses, test switches, and failure to stop at moderate speed. It was suggested that MVSS 121 should be suspended, NHTSTA should ease requirements to eliminate the need for antilock and high torque steering axle brakes, and field test for 2 years before issuing final regulations. Malfunctions were also reported by Greyhound. General Motors had some reports of radio frequency interference but none B. F. Goodrich (antilock supplier) reported start-up problems rather than design deficiencies. Eaton (another supplier) said that the malfunction rate of components was less than 0.5 percent and it was too early to call for changes in the MVSS 121.
