FIXED HIGHWAY LIGHTING QUESTIONNAIRE NO. II SUMMARY
The results are summarized of a questionnaire survey of the 48 states and the District of Columbia relating to operational practice in this field. The survey which was designed to assess the usefulness of data published in Highway Research Circular 149 (1973), also gauged the effects of the energy shortage. The questions in the survey cover the following areas: the information provided in the 1973 Circular; changes in practices since 1972; the reasons for these changes; proposed changes and their causative reasons; high mast lighting, mercury vapor, and metal halide; turning out of lights due to energy shortage; re-energizing any or all of such lights; evaluation of the effects of turning out of lights; effect on accidents; methods of concurrent control of traffic volume and speed; test data and reports of studies relating to the above; and other measures to reduce energy consumption. Tabulated responses to the survey are included in the appendix.
