ALTERNATIVE FUEL ENGINES IN HEAVY DUTY VEHICLES. PROCEEDINGS OF THE 8TH EQUIPMENT MANAGEMENT WORKSHOP, MAY 28-31, 1990, DES MOINES, IOWA

The goals of Detroit Diesel Corporation's alternative fuel activities are to develop a heavy duty engine capable of complying with the 1991 vehicle emissions standards, and possibly, the 1994 standards. This paper briefly reviews the Environmental Protection Agency's emission standards for 1991 and 1994, then looks at what engine manufacturers are doing to improve engine emissions. Specific areas examined include multi-fuel engines, methanol demonstration projects, particulate traps, and compressed natural gas (CNG) programs.
