COME-APARTS SHIPS--THE ANSWER TO LOWER FREIGHTS
The alternative to high-speed ships and their high fuel costs is the "sectional ship", vessels with a number of easily separable joints in their hull. With this concept it is possible to arrange a vessel with the machinery, navigation gear and accommodation all aft in one section, while the remainder of the hull forward is divided into a number of box sections with the bow unit being either a fairing section, or also incorporating cargo space. The cargo sections may be distributed at a number of ports, discharging and reloading cargo as it arrives at the quay.
