COMPUTER AIDED MEASUREMENT OF EARTHWORKS QUANTITIES
Earthwork measurement for a large road project involves massive amounts of data. When processed manually, the calculations are repetitive and tedious. The sheer volume of paperwork increases the risk of error, and makes presentation and checking difficult. The computer system described in the paper allows site survey information to be processed by a computer without transcription. Data is stored in separate files set up for each cross-section. A tabulated listing of cross-section data may be printed for record purposes. Automatic computer plotting of the cross-sections enables a quick visual check of the stored data to be made. Quantities are calculated by the end area method. Up to ten different types of material can be handled by the system, with up to five types in any single cross-section. (A) /TRRL/
