LINCOLN PARK LAGOON BRIDGE RESTORATION

The restoration is described of a landmark structure, the art deco-style bridge of striking appearance in Kenosha, Wisconsin. Natural effects aggravated by the use of deicing salt, combined with vandals and deferred maintenance, had caused extensive deterioration of the non-air-entrained concrete over the years since in 1936. The alumninum railing had to be replaced, the center span of the deck had experienced deflection due to creep and loss of section, and the entire surface of the bridge that was exposed to rain was in various stages of natural exposure of the aggregate. Core samples taken prior to designing the restoration work showed a great variation in compressive strengths. Many material mixes were required to obtain a finish which, when exposed, would have the same appearance as the adjacent existing concrete. These and other repair highlights are described.
