MULTIMODAL NAVIGATION TECHNOLOGY ASSESSMENT. IN: CONFERENCE RECORD OF PAPERS PRESENTED AT THE FIRST VEHICLE NAVIGATION AND INFORMATION SYSTEMS CONFERENCE, TORONTO, ONTARIO, CANADA - SEPTEMBER 11-13, 1989

The transportation sector is of vital importance to the development of the Canadian economy. Canada's vast territory and diverse geography has led to the development of diverse transportation systems which span the land, marine and airspace environments. There is a continuous need to improve the safety, reliability and economy (productivity) of these transportation systems. The research described herein is directed towards assessing the trends of specific technologies and their likely impact on navigation systems used in transportation during the next 25 years. An awareness of the above forthcoming technological developments will result in a more effective, efficient and economical long term planning of navigation research and development in the transportation sector.
