TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT. RTS ENGLISH ISSUE NUMBER 6. THE FUTURE OF ROAD TRAFFIC MEASUREMENT
The increasing importance of cars has made it essential to have knowledge of the traffic on the highways. This is obtained with permanent measurement stations and with periodic surveys. The aim of this data collection is to acquire knowledge about a certain number of traffic and vehicle characteristics: flow and lane occupancy, speeds, vehicle classification by length, weight and number of axles, ...and so on. This set of characteristics is used not only to gain statistical knowledge about traffic (maintenance schedules, traffic flow plans) but also to supply traffic control systems with data.
