SCALE AND OTHER FACTORS AFFECTING THE RESULTS OF PULL-OUT TESTS OF GRIDS BURIED IN SAND

In discussing Palmeira and Milligan's paper on "Scale and Other Factors Affecting the Results of Pull-out Tests of Grids Buried in Sand" (see IRRD 826634), the author describes some of his own work on mesh. The split-box design is described and illustrated. Lubrication of the wall face was found to be necessary. Design of the slit was particularly important with the use of 4 layers of soft rubber with grease in between being found to give satisfactory results. Any imperfections in the rubber strip affected pull-out resistance. The sensitivity of pull-out tests is emphasised by the author who suggests earlier data should be viewed with caution as these factors had not then been considered. He also asks what slit design was used by Palmeira and Milligan and calls for the development of a standard for pull-out testing. Palmeira and Milligan reply that their slit design was similar to the one described but using lubricated polythene and they agree with the necessity for standardising test procedures.
