PRECASTING OF SEGMENTAL BRIDGES
This paper discusses planning criteria for design and construction personnel involved in precast segmental bridge construction that can lead to optimum equipment and procedures for precasting segmental bridges. Although common in Europe, segmental bridges have only recently made their debut in the United States; suggestions are made as to the economic implication of this new concept in bridge construction. for maximum efficiency, standardization of techniques and materials is stressed, with recommendations for industrializing the construction of segmental bridges. Match-casting of segments is shown to be the most reliable method for providing the required accuracies; it also results in significant secondary advantages. Major items affecting the cost and efficiency of forming and casting segments are discussed; these include formwork, stressing systems, reinforcing, and casting procedures.
