IMPLEMENTATING COMPUTER SIMULATION OF TRAFFIC SIGNAL SYSTEMS
The deficiencies inherent in methods of determining timing plans are noted, the requirements of a suitable method are discussed, and the application is described of the Urban Traffic Control System-1 (UTCS-1) computer simulation program. After obtaining field data, a link and node diagram corresponding to the traffic flows within the newtork was prepared. The model was validated on the basis of vehicle counts, and the observed vehicle counts for the morning peak hour were compared with corresponding simulated counts. The simulation results indicated changes in cycle times and the interchange is now operating with time settings determined with the aid of the UTCS-1.
