AUTOMATED SURVEYS FOR GREATER EFFICIENCY

Photologging time lapse video studies and automated traffic data studies brings field activities into the office and provides more benefits for less cost than the methods formerly used. Some of the advantages of these programs are lowered accident exposures to city employees, less pollution, less gas used for field trips and improved communication. Photologging involves a filmed record (200 pictures per mile) of the street taken by a Flight Research 35 mm camera installed in a Dodge Van (moving); a cam driven by a speedometer cable activates the camera. Timelapse studies are visual records of traffic activities made using a video tape recorder or intervalometer controlled move camera which records segments of the real time activity. In automated data studies, 16-channel punch tape traffic counters are used to collect traffic volume data. Three general categories of data reduction programs have been developed to reduce, calculate and summarize the information: single volume summaries, routine multiple volume summaries, and secondary multiple volume summaries.
