MAPPING THE LATEST TRENDS IN GIS

The article describes how cities and counties nationwide are implementing geographical information systems (GIS) and computer mapping technologies to improve the quality of life. It is described how the California Office of Emergency Services (OES) is using GIS to be better prepared for possible earthquake disasters, nuclear reactor meltdowns, and other emergencies. OES was able to enhance its disaster response in database management, automated report generation, control of the GIS to provide feedback for verifying communication accuracy, and creation of a distributed database. The digitizing of maps into the GIS is described, as well as the creation of maps that simulate wind direction. Use of GIS in Gwinnett County, Georgia and Dover, New Hampshire, Alabama and illinois is described. In Hunstsville, Alabama, old maps were not adequate, so updated ones are being photogrammetrically produced using aerial photography tied to a global positioning system network of more than 400 monuments.
