GAS ENTRAPMENT IN GRANULAR LENSES IN SILT/CLAY MATRIX

It is noted that piezometers screened near the top of the granular layers acccumulate gas pockets even though the ground water regime is believed to be saturated. This technical note shows that these gas pockets could be artifacts resulting from the presence of the piezometer. The derivation is based upon highly simplified geometry to demonstrate the fundamentals of the proposed mechanism. More complex derivations would be reqired to apply the analysis to most field situations.
