RESTRIKING HOT METAL VAPOR LAMPS--LAMP CHARACTERISTIC AND CIRCUIT REQUIREMENT
This article discusses the restriking process for high-intensity discharge (HID) lamps and describes an instant restrike circuit which can be added to existing HID installations. This circuit does not permit the lamp to deionize during a momentary power outage. It consists of a standby, battery powered solid-state inverter which is used to power the lamp whenever the power fails. The reignition problem is thus eliminated and emergency lighting provided. The disadvantage of this system is battery maintenance and inverter cost. Another system, which still utilized an inverter and battery, has the inverter remotely located from the luminaire or near the electrical load center for the lighting system. Preliminary tests of both the unitized and centralized system, utilizing 400-watt mercury lamps and 1000-watt metal halide lamps, indicate that both systems work, with the centralized being less expensive and easier to maintain.
