ESTIMATION OF LIQUEFACTION POTENTIAL BY MEANS OF EXPLOSION TEST
A series of field vibration experiments was performed with the aim of estimating the liquerfaction potential of sandy ground at the time of an earthquake. Borehole explosions were used for the vibration source. A significant relation was found between the ground stiffness and the pore water pressure caused by the explosion. It was concluded that it is possible to estimate the ground liquefaction potential by the proposed method with good results. Those factors to be used as the estimation index for liquefaction potential are the relation between the shock water pressure and the residual water pressure caused by explosion, and the ground settlement rate. Future study should concentrate on: the applicability of the method to different ground conditions and to deeper ground; improving the measurement accuracy of ground acceleration, pore water pressure, and ground density; and determining the characteristics of residual pore pressure by a laboratory dyamic shear test.
