NATIONAL ROAD MAINTENANCE CONDITION SURVEY. REPORT ON THE 1990 SURVEY

In 1990 the general condition of roads in England and Wales, as measured by the visual condition survey, was similar to that in 1989. The deteriorating trend evident from 1980 to 1986 has been reversed. The condition of both trunk roads and local authority roads has improved since the mid 1980's, and is similar to levels in 1977, the first year of the survey. For local authority roads condition in 1990 was still worse than in 1980. Overall footway condition improved in 1990 compared with 1989. This is the first time since the deterioration in 1986 that it has returned to the pre-1986 level. The survey also gives another measure of footway condition in the average number of hazardous spot defects. See IRRD 830325 for the abstract of the 1989 report. (TRRL)
