SOME SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC CONSIDERATIONS DURING AN ENVIRONMENTAL ANALYSIS RELATED TO A HIGHWAY ACTIVITY

This paper discusses the nonuser economic and social environmental impacts of a highway activity on communities, groups, and individuals - impacts which have been emphasized in recent legislation. It examines employment, tax and property value impacts, and social impacts. There may be both positive and negative effects, varying in degree and intensity in the areas of employment, taxes, and property values. The social impact of a highway activity on communities, life styles, individuals, and groups also varies. To alleviate any negative economic and social environmental impacts, the author suggests that meaningful communication with the community which is to be affected begin as early as possible.
