SUGGESTIONS FOR A SYLLABUS OF ROAD SAFETY EDUCATION IN NURSERY AND PRIMARY SCHOOLS
The author discusses the need for road safety education for children in schools and proposes a suitable syllabus. After pointing out the need for training at school she deals with nursery schools and the first year at infant schools, where it is suggested that there should be education in improved vocabulary relating to road safety, the development of traffic awareness (including factors such as direction of flow and the estimation of speed and distance) and the use of the pavement. Proposals are put forward for a training programme commencing at the age of 6 to 7 which extends to their transfer to secondary school. Particular reference is made to the teaching of the use of zebra and pelican crossings and the difficulties children have with them. The remainder of the article sets out a syllabus which begins with training in minor road crossing, continues in stage 2 with the full green cross code and concludes with training in safe gaps and pre-cycling training leading up to the national cycling proficiency scheme. The syllabus includes a parallel programme aimed at improving traffic awareness. /TRRL/
