EVALUATION OF THE EFFECT ON TRAFFIC SAFETY OF THE INTRODUCTION OF SIDE REFLECTION ON BICYCLES

EVALUATIE VAN HET EFFECT OP DE VERKEERSONVEILIGHEID VAN DE INVOERING VAN ZIJREFLECTIE BIJ FIETSEN

Since January 1, 1987 the use of retroreflecting circles on the wheels of bicycles has been mandatory in the Netherlands. Before the introduction of the legislation about 25% of all bicycles had side reflection. After the introduction of the law side reflection had increased to about 73% by the end of 1988, and the number is still increasing slowly. After the introduction there is a significant (relative) decrease of about 5% of the number of cyclist traffic victims in darkness or in twilight. Results show also that the clear relationship between the measure of extent of side reflection of bicycles from certain age groups (12-15, 45-54, 55 years and older) and the decrease in the number of victims in these age groups.
