SIMON: A PLATE-GIRDER DESIGN PROGRAM (WORKING STRESS DESIGN)
U. S. Steel Research has developed a computer program, SIMON, which prepares a preliminary plate-girder bridge design in accordance with the specifications of the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO). To use SIMON, a user inputs a trial bridge design. The program then analyzes the bridge, checks the results against the AASHTO Working Stress Design provisions, and prepares a new design. If the trial design violates the AASHTO provisions, the new design is modified to correct the violations--otherwise, the new design is, if possible, made lighter than the trial design. This process continues until a final design is found. A bill of materials is then prepared for the final design. Numerous parameters are specified by the user and are not altered by SIMON--thus, the user exerts a significant influence on the final design. Essentially, SIMON does many of the laborious computations in a bridge design and thereby permits the user to conveniently investigate numerous alternative designs. SIMON is available on the USS CDC 6500 computer. The AASHTO Load Factor Design provisions have been added to SIMON and should result in more economical steel-bridge designs. Pre- and post-processing routines are being developed for SIMON to permit parametric studies of a bridge, such as varying the girder depth or the number of girders.
