PETROPHYSICAL CHARACTERISTICS OF CHALK
PETROPHYSIQUE DE LA CRAIE
The petrophysical study of chalk showed the influence of its fine texture on its physical and mechanical characteristics. Mention is made of the importance of the constituents on the value and dispersion of the mechanical strength (compression strength, microhardness, wave propagation velocity) and that of the microscopic matrix on physical characteristics (density, porosity, suction, capillarity). The analysis these different parameters and of their influence on geotechnical problems led to a definition of a method of identifying chalk by means of simple tests and to A 3-category classification: hard chalk, semi hard chalk, soft chalk. Attention is drawn to the need of carrying out a more general study of chalk mass taking into account the heterogeneities due to cracking and weathering. This study would prove a worthwhile addition to the previous study of chalk samples. /TRRL/
