MAINTAINING THE ROUGHNESS CHARACTERISTICS OF BITUMINOUS WEARING COURSES

Wearing courses on motorways in Italy have to date been constructed with crushed basalt aggregates, and except in isolated cases, there have been no great problems regarding surface wear under traffic. The reduced availability of basalt (due to closed deposits and high transport costs over long distances), and the increase in wearing coarse thickness from 3 to 5.6 cm, have led to the use of an increased percentage of limestone aggregates. This article reports laboratory tests which show that a mixture containing 80% basalt and 20% limestone aggregates produces a surface roughness analogous to that of a 100% basalt mixture. The laboratory results will be compared with field tests to be carried out on a test section constructed on the Raveuna branch off the Bologna - Bari highway. /TRRL/
