EARTH PRESSURE AND MOVEMENTS UPON AN ANGULAR RETAINING WALL
JORDTRYCK OCH ROERELSER VID AATERFYLINING BAKOM EN VINKELSTOEDMUR
The extent to which earth pressure was affected by the compaction method was investigated during the construction of a 5.5 x 60 m retaining wall. The method used differed considerably from the one originally stipulated and was based more on feeling than theory. The nature of the soil, the earthwork and the foundation method are described briefly. Displacements due to rotation, settlement, horizontal sliding or deflection of the front wall were measured. In addition, earth pressure was determined. A number of soil samples of the backfill were taken at different stages of the operations. The results of the investigation were: (1) The compaction effect obtained when filling material is dropped into place from a height of a few meters is negligible. (2) A 3.5 ton vibrating roller gives insufficient compaction on 3-5 M thick layers of clayey, silty sand. (3) The compaction properties of the filling material improve distinctly when its dry bulk density exceeds 1.70 tons/cubic meter. The compressibility of the backfill would have been reduced to 10% of the actual compressibility if a proper method of compaction had been used. /TRRL/
