INNOVATIVE PAVEMENT FOR CONTAINER TERMINAL
At the Port of Porland container terminal, the selection of pozzolan/lime/cement stabilized base courses and a graduated modulus of elasticity in layers resulted in significant savings and a high quality pavement for heavy loads. The process of container terminal pavement design includes the site evaluation, selection of a pavement thickness utilizing modern airport paving design techniques, and recognizing the differences between aircraft and container handling equipment loadings. The selection of economical materials and construction procedures are the areas in which most paving costs can be saved. A static modulus of elasticity technique was used in the Portland project to analyze the subgrade. The advantages and disadvantages of the mobile gantry crane terminal are discussed, and comments are made on the determination of thickness requirements of the subgrade. Comments are also made on the reduction of construction costs in the areas of energy and effort reduction.
