ANALYTICAL TECHNIQUES
A research effort on the identification of hydrated cement constituents using a scanning electron microscope/energy - dispersive, X-ray spectrometer combination (SEM-EDXA), analyzed hardened portland cement concrete pastes. A second effert, however, points out certain limitations inherent in the functioning of the SEM-EDXA when applied to rough fractured surfaces of hardened concrete. Other analytical techniques reported here include the following: A simple approximate method for correcting the inter-element effects in X-ray fluorescence analysis: X-ray fluorescence analysis of portland cement through the use of experimentally determined correction factors; a method for the determination of some minor compounds in portland cement clinker by X-ray diffraction: Apparatus for the radiometric analysis of calcium and iron content of cement raw meal; A thermogravimetric method for determining calcium and magnesium oxides in dolomite and dolomitic limestones.
