SCRAPER SELECTION: GUIDES ZERO IN ON EARTHMOVING GAINS
Guidelines are presented that help eliminate guesswork in selecting the proper equipment for earthmoving. A bulldozer is recommended for 100 ft. or less; large dozers can push economically up to 500 ft. For terrain that permits haul road - for 1.5 mi or more, off highway trucks are suggested; shovels for loading if the earth is in an undisturbed or bank condition and is hard to load, and front-end loaders if the earth to be moved is in a stockpile or easy to load from the bank. A scraper is the best choice for 300 ft. to 1.5 mi. However, the choice of scraper is a difficult one. Sand, gravel, silt, loam and silt/clay mixtures are good scraper material. A dragline or dredge must be selected when clay is involved and especially if the water table is high. A scraper may be selected if it (loaded or empty) can cross the cut under its own power; if the material is so set and sticky that a pusher is needed to assist the scraper, then, another machine must be considered. Rock is another difficult material for scrapers.
