UNCONVENTIONAL DESIGN FEATURES ON THE M11
This article is mainly concerned with the unconventional design features of the bridges used in South Harlow to Bishops Stortford section of the M11. The author discusses the design of two small skew bridges that have been built to carry the motorway over single carriageway side roads. A continuous three-span deck on column piers has been used to improve both appearance and natural lighting: further improvement in lighting is given by the inclusion of a light well grillage in the central reservation. Innovations in foot bridges include the adaption of short end spans over v-shaped verge piers and the use of the outer leg of the pier as a stair approach. Details are given of accommodation bridges which were designed to combine visual interest with minimum cost. These are constructed of hollow in-situ reinforced concrete with overhanging end sections. A description is also given of the over bridges which are conventional continuous l-span slab structures of reinforced concrete cast in place. /TRRL/
