SHORSTON BY PASS BRIDGES
This article gives an outline of bridges number 8,9,16,17 and 18 constructed on the Shorston By-Pass (partly, M56 and partly M63). Bridge 16 is a ten-span viaduct turning through an angle of 116 degrees. It is of steel box girder construction with a reinforced concrete deck slab. Its design has been stiffened following appraisal by Merrison Rules. Bridges 8 and 9 are at a skew of 60 degrees. These were on alluvial deposits and required extensive piling: the authors briefly outline the design methods used. The box girder spans were strengthened following appraisal by Merrison Rules. Bridge 17 involved the widening of an existing 30 degree skew bridge by 20 ft. Thermic lances were used to burn through the deck in the appropriate place, the gap filled by pretensioned inverted T-Beams and infilled with concrete. Bridge 18 is a two 4-span structure separated by a light-well. Cased borings were made and pre-cast columns located in them, concreted in and, after withdrawing the casing backfilled with lean concrete to verge level. The deck was cast monolithically with the columns on a bed of spoil, which was subsequently removed. Abutments were made by reinforcing contiguous piles and facing with pumped concrete. /TRRL/
