VIBRO CRUSHING STUDY OF THE APTITUDE OF CHALK TO COMPACTION
ETUDE PAR VIBROBROYAGE DE L'APTITUDE DES CRAIES AU COMPACTAGE
Vibro crushing is used for the laboratory forecast of difficulties encountered in the in-situ compaction of chalk. The samples, which are crushed dry into 5lb aggregates are subjected to wear for a duration of 30 seconds at various moisture contents. It is observed that for most types of chalk the quantity of elements smaller than 1,25 mm, which are formed as a result of wear varies linearly with the moisture content. Each type of chalk therefore, can be characterized by a straight line representing wear , which gives its sensitivity to fragmentation. Furthermore the fines of a given type of chalk are characterized by their liquid limit from elements smaller than 400 mm, which are account the Attenberg limit sensitivity of many types of account the attenberg limit sensitivity of many types of chalk to laboratory procedures. By combining wear characteristics, the natural moisture content, the liquidity moisture content of the vibrocrushed fines, and empirical coefficients, which take into considerations conditions on the construction site, it is possible to determine the critical moisture content beyond which difficulties can be encountered during compaction. /TRRL/
