FOUNDATIONS DANS LA CRAIE

Mention is made of the difficulties arising during the preparation of chalk samples for laboratory investigations and of the dispersion of mechanical characteristics resulting from them. Attention is drawn to the importance of in-situ measurements, in particular pressiometer measurements, for evaluating the overall reaction of chalk. Observations and tests have shown that calculations based on the above tests were on the pessimistic side, in particular the formulae for dynamic driving used for driven piles. Chalk has a tendency to liquefaction under the effect of blows, and its mechanical strength is restored after driving either by dissipation of excess interstitial pressure or by a little- known thixotropic restructuring of the chalk. /TRRL/
