TRAFFIC AND ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT RELATED TO RECREATIONAL TRAVEL

This report presents the results of a survey undertaken with respect to recreation travel. A questionnaire was circulated to all metropolitan and non-metropolitan counties in England and Wales and also to the 10 national parks. It has been subdivided into 4 sections and covers a range of activities from planning and design to management and maintenance. Almost all questions required a yes or no answer and the results have been assessed in terms of the percentage of affirmative response. Tables summarize the the response to the survey and the percentage affirmative response to the main features. The results for non-metropolitan counties show a high affirmative response to most questions relating to policy, design and planning such as guided walks. A high response was also obtained for car restrainers and parking controls, and a fair response for route hierarchy. The remaining questions, mainly involving 'hardware' elicited poor responses. Conclusions are given as being encouraging considering the financial situation and it is hoped to update the survey on an annual basis. A sample questionnaire is given in an appendix. /TRRL/
