IMPACT OF REVISED SPEED LIMITS
The results are discussed of nationwide studies directed toward substantiating the impact of reduced speed limits on running speeds, travel, travel patterns, fuel consumption and highway safety, and attention is focussed on the Ohio experience. In Ohio, two studies were undertaken sequentially: (1) a short term analysis, the purpose of which was to establish the direction of the long term analysis and to identify those traffic factors which experienced significant changes; three two-month periods were examined and running speeds, traffic volumes and fatal accidents were analyzed; (2) a long term analysis to examine trends in factors since 1969. Graphs illustrating the findings are presented. January 1974 yields the results or impact of the crisis and all associated factors. The 10 to 15 percent reduction of the accident trends below the 1972 levels is the major impact of the energy cirsis. The accident problem associated with construction work is also discussed.
