THE PRAIRIE ANNUAL

This article contains a month by month account of the reconstruction of a prairie. It is an unusual account, however, in that the author, using poetry and prose, appeals not only to our understanding of the means of reconstruction, but to our realization of the urgency for it. Consider these words from the author's introduction: Prairie isn't only grass. It's sensitive organism of plants, animals, birds, reptiles, and invertebrates. We've destroyed and altered most of the prairie community... traded thousands of living things for bushels of corn. Now civilized man knows that value of indigenous plant communities. The question in no longer "Why save them?" but rather "How to save them?"
