SEMI-SUBMERSIBLE ICEBREAKING TANKER
A fleet of semi-submersible icebreaking tankers may provide the most economical means of moving crude oil and similar bulk materials through the ice-licked Arctic seas. This was one of the conclusions drawn by a five-year study made by the Aker Group of Oslo, Norway, which was released recently at the third international conference on Port and Ocean Engineering Under Arctic Conditions (POAC) at the University of Alaska. Briefly reviews general design considerations, propulsion, stability, icebreaking capability and a comparative cost analysis between a conventional icebreaking tanker and the SSIT.
