FIELD TESTS ON PAVEMENT FOUNDATIONS . FIELD TESTING IN ENGINEERING GEOLOGY. PROCEEDINGS OF THE TWENTY-FOURTH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF THE ENGINEERING GROUP OF THE GEOLOGICAL SOCIETY, SUNDERLAND POLYTECHNIC, SEPTEMBER 4-8 1988

This paper describes a trial which comes close to simulating traffic loading of pavement and the results thus obtained are compared with those obtained with non-simulative test methods. The use of an instrumented vibratory roller is also discussed. Five sites were tested. The first, was on a paved haul road which consisted in part of a 7 m high embankment built of weathered coal measures, sandstones, mudstones and siltstone. Instrumented roller testing was carried out at this site together with Clegg Hammer, static cone penetrometer, and Plate Bearing Test (PBT) measurements. The other 4 sites were on part of the A42 Ashby and Measham by-pass, where Triassic sandstone and marls were excavated and also used as fill. At all 4 sites falling weight deflectometer (FWD) testing was compared with dynamic cone penetrometer (DCP), static penetrometer, and Clegg Hammer measurements. The test results show that there is little correlation between different test method results at the same site. Tests using large equipment (PBT, FWD, Dynaplaque instrumented rollers) are expensive and/or cumbersome. The simple alternatives tried have other limitations. The static cone penetrometer is limited to use in weak fine granular or soft cohesive soils and insufficient material of this type was tested for significant correlations to be drawn. The DCP results did not relate closely to those from other tests used. The Clegg Hammer results related fairly closely with the central deflection of the FWD and also identified the markedly softer spots found in the roller test. It could also be related fairly closely to FWD back-analysed stiffness. None of the methods could be used for reliable determination of a single materials normal variability.
