Reliability analysis techniques developed for steel bridges and offshore structures provide a methodology which can also be used to evaluate the safety of substandard or deteriorating reinforced concrete structures and arch bridges. This is illustrated by reference to cases of structures with alkali aggregate reaction and chloride-induced corrosion damage. The shortage of data on the statistics and deformation characteristics of concrete failure limits the quantitative application and highlights the necessity for more testing of deteriorated reinforced concrete. Consideration of overall reliability must include assessment of risks inherent in road closures for inspection and remedial work, the uncertainties of inspection procedures, and the reliability of repair and corrosion control.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 830553.
