THE MODERN USE OF TRINIDAD LAKE ASPHALT

This article summarizes a more comprehensive paper prepared for Previte and Co. on the use of Trinidad lake asphalt in road mixtures. The author discusses the design of rolled asphalt base courses and surfacings giving examples from BS594 and referring to modifications needed to suit particular purposes. Reference is made to the use of curves obtained by plotting stability, aggregate density and mix density against bitumen percentage; typical formulae for calculating optimum binder content are included. The use of Trinidad asphalt in asphaltic concrete is discussed with examples of its use in Germany. Gussaphalt (which is intermediate between mastic asphalt and rolled asphalt) is dealt with, followed by mastic asphalt. Typical mixes are given for each. Skid resistance is discussed and attention drawn to the improvement given by the inclusion of 25 per cent or more of Trinidad asphalt to improve weathering characteristics. An account is given of heavy duty road surfacings which use the highest possible percentage of coarse aggregate and a very strong "mortar" using Trinidad asphalt. In conclusion comments are made on "friction coats" and the use of "Marshall" asphalt on airfield runways. /TRRL/
