NOISE LEVEL CHARACTERISTICS OF HEAVY DUTY TRUCKS
The paper describes experimental methods for investigating and reducing truck noise. An attempt is made to reduce the vehicle noise level by about 10 dba below the selected target level by silencing or removing all noise producing components. These components are then replaced individually, and their effect upon the total noise output of the vehicle determined. The author discusses current and possible future methods of reducing noise, and concludes that further reduction below existing legal requirements will be a slow process. Exterior measurements of noise were made at nine sites and the results suggest that certain types of site may be calibrated in relation to a standard site. Comparative results may be produced in a stationary test. /TRRL/
