DIESEL FUEL SPECIFICATIONS FOR MAXIMUM OVERALL ECONOMY
It is suggested that the British standard specification for diesel fuel, which currently emphasises high quality, could be reoriented towards providing maximum availability of suitable fuel. Factors controlled by the specification, which include cleanliness, physical behaviour and chemical properties, are examined in turn to assess how existing limits could be modified while still achieving standards which are acceptable to the oil and motor industries. The author states that an increase on the yield of diesel fuel, totalling about 4.5 per cent of the 1972 UK consumption, could be obtained by modifying the physical behaviour standards, particularly low temperature fluidity, volatility at the lower end of the distillation temperature range and viscosity. A further 3.5 per cent increase could be made available by reducing the currently accepted flash point to the b5 specification, and modifications to the acceptable limits of other factors such as the carbon and sulphur residue and cetane number could also provide useful increases, although some modifications to engines, lubrication and maintenance schedules would be necessary. /TRRL/
