CONTRIBUTION TO THE CHALK CLASSIFICATION BY MEANS OF VISUAL AND PENETRATION TECHNIQUES. PENETRATION TESTING IN THE UK. PROCEEDINGS OF THE GEOTECHNOLOGY CONFERENCE ORGANIZED BY THE INSTITUTION OF CIVIL ENGINEERS AND HELD IN BIRMINGHAM ON 6-8 JULY 1988
Assessment of the engineering properties of chalk from conventional ground investigation methods often leads to large claims being sought when the actual behaviour differs from that anticipated. This paper compares the advantages and disadvantages of various investigation and testing methods in both Upper and Middle Chalk and also examines their implications in the grading of chalk. The techniques employed include visual examination of a large diameter vertical shaft, electric cone and standard penetration tests, rotary and U100 sampling. Saturation moisture content, chalk crushing value, and a limited number of plate bearing tests are also examined.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828222.
