MOTORWAYS 1974: FEWER PASSENGERS, MORE FREIGHT, BETTER SAFETY

The year 1974 showed an increase of 3.7% (with regard to 1973) in the overall length of the Societa Autostrade motorway network, but total mileage travelled in 1974 (13981 million km) was less than the previous year (14245 million km). In this overall mileage reduction of 1.9%, passenger traffic decreased by 5.8% whereas freight traffic increased by 9.8%. Passenger traffic on the network considered (totalling 1887.5km), was approximately 19 thousand million passenger/km and freight transport equalled 18 thousand million ton/km. This compares with rail transport over all Italy of 38.7 thousand million passenger 1km and 18.5 thousand million ton/km respectively. Accidents, injuries, & fatalities were all lower in 1974 than in 1973 by 20%, 20%, and 19% respectively. Mileage, traffic and accident figures are given in tables. /TRRL/
