PEDESTRIAN PRECINCTS

This article, using Rome as an example, criticises the proliferation of pedestrian precincts in city centres, mainly on the grounds that they create new difficulties for motorists and lead to even greater traffic congestion on the already overcrowded roads they are allowed to use. Such congestion it is argued would cause a general deterioration of traffic flow, resulting in increased fuel consumption and a higher accident rate. /TRRL/
