IN-SITU DETERMINATION OF GRANULAR BASECOURSE STIFFNESS. UNBOUND AGGREGATES IN ROADS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE 3RD INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM, UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM, APRIL 11-13, 1989

This paper describes an investigation into the development of a quick method for assessing the in-situ stiffness of granular base courses. Four types of tests were evaluated on a specially built test pavement which included five sections with different granular bases, (crushed rubble + slag; crushed rubble; crushed concrete; full depth asphalt; and crushed masonry). The tests involved were the well known Static Plate Bearing Test, the Dynamic Plate Bearing Test, the Clegg Impact Test and the Falling Weight Deflectometer Test. The Dynamic Plate Bearing Test and the Clegg Impact Test were shown to have a great potential as a quick means of testing of granular layers.
