SPECIFICATIONS FOR MATERIALS USED AS AN UNBOUND AGGREGATE. UNBOUND AGGREGATES IN ROADS. PROCEEDINGS OF THE 3RD INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM, UNIVERSITY OF NOTTINGHAM, APRIL 11-13, 1989

This paper describes a research programme undertaken to test the mechanical properties of unbound granular materials in order to produce specifications for the use of such materials in road construction. The following tests were carried out: (a) standard laboratory tests such as the sieve test; compaction tests (vibratory hammer, Proctor, modified proctor, and single point Proctor) CBR (California Bearing Ratio); crushing tests (Dutch crushing test, Los Angeles Abrasion Test and Aggregate Impact Value) and tests to determine moisture and frost susceptibility; (b) cyclic loading triaxial tests; and (c) accelerated loading tests using a full scale test pavement. A finite element computer program was also developed for the calculation of the stresses and strains in pavements. Specifications for the following granular materials are presented: (a) crushed concrete; (b) crushed masonry; and crushed rubble, all on sieve 8 mm.
