PERFORMANCE SPECIFICATION BASED ON SORPTIVITY TO AVOID DETERIORATION IN SEVERE ENVIRONMENTS . PROCEEDINGS OF 3RD INTERNATIOAL CONFERENCE ON DETERIORATION AND REPAIR OF REINFORCED CONCRETE IN THE ARABIAN GULF, BAHRAIN, OCTOBER 21-24 1989. VOLUME 1.

While convenient to use compressive strength for performance specification in severe environments, a particular minimum 28 day strength would not ensure adequate durability. Maximum values of permeability or chloride diffusivity may be more appropriate but these parameters are difficult to measure. However, sorptivity is a far more accurate indicator of concrete performance in severe environments as most processes of deterioration are dependent on the absorption of aggressive agents. Sorptivity is also a relatively easy parameter to measure. The authors propose that the twin requirements of a simple sorptivity test together with a proven track-record could be used for effective performance specification.(A) For the covering abstract of the conference see IRRD 828897.
